January means the start of a new year. A new year is typically followed by resolutions or “new year, new me,” and it all can feel a little daunting sometimes. The coming and going of a new year may have you considering anti-aging products and treatments, especially with the rise of fillers. If you’re considering a “skin-vestment,” Sculptra is an option that treats the issue at the source: loss of collagen due to the natural aging process.
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is a dermal injection, made of poly-lactic acid. Unlike typical hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra results appear gradually and not instantaneously. HA fillers are for an instant, but more temporary gratification; whereas Sculptra targets the root of the problem, which is this loss of collagen attributed to the body’s natural aging process. PLLA in Sculptra stimulates the cells of the dermis to produce more collagen fibers.
So, why would we need more collagen production? Collagen and elastin work together in the dermis; while elastin gives the skin a “bounce-back” effect, collagen is a fibrous protein that is responsible for the structure and support of the dermis. External factors, such as UV damage, affect collagen production (wear your SPF!) Unfortunately, our bodies produce less and less collagen starting at the age of 25, and volume loss is noticeable in our thirties. Therefore, really anyone is a candidate for Sculptra!
When will I see results?
Sculptra requires a little more patience than HA fillers. It may take up to 8 weeks for the subtle, but noticeable, results of Sculptra to be visible. After your Sculptra appointment, you may be tender and sore at the injection site. As a post-care requirement, you’ll need to massage the treated area for the first five days: five minutes, five times a day. This tenderness can make the massage uncomfortable, but there is essentially no downtime. Many patients love Sculptra because of its gradual results, replacing volume over a longer period of time, compared to HA fillers.
What is the cost?
At The Spa at MidAmerica, located in Glen Carbon, IL, we typically recommend 2-3 Sculptra treatments, spaced out over the course of multiple months. Because of this, our providers tell patients that Sculptra is a marathon, not a sprint! Results will not be instantaneous, but absolutely worth the wait! Sculptra is charged by the syringe, starting at $600. Consultations are complimentary and always welcome at The Spa!
