June is National Acne Awareness month! Did you know that acne is considered a medical condition? According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), acne affects between 40-50 million Americans at some point in their lives and is the most common type of skin disorder.
Many of our patients here at The Spa at MidAmerica, located in Glen Carbon, IL, come to us seeking treatment options to help resolve acne blemishes and scarring. Options such as a Forever Clear BBL laser treatment or VI Peel are always popular options but are not recommended in the summer months due to increased UV exposure. So, what acne-treatment options are summer-safe but effective? Read on to learn more about our providers’ suggestions.
Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is a treatment that helps to improve the appearance of the skin. Chemical peels work by your provider applying a chemical solution to the top layer of your skin. The chemical solution raises your skin’s pH level to loosen the hold between the dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin (epidermis) from the healthy skin layers that lie underneath.
SkinCeuticals Gel Peel SM (Salicylic/Mandelic) is a light chemical peel that lightly exfoliates the top layer of your skin and removes dirt, oil, and dead skin cells in the process. Gel Peel helps improve skin texture and decongest clogged pores. There is little to no downtime with this peel, making it a great summertime option for those with acne-prone and aging skin types. SkinCeuticals Micropeel Plus 20 & 30 is also a safe, yet effective, chemical peel option for summer. This chemical peel helps improve the appearance of uneven skin texture, blotchiness, and surface imperfections. Patients may experience slight peeling after this treatment and should avoid direct sunlight for a few days afterward.
Epionce Lite Peel: Refresh is another great chemical peel option for those looking to relieve pore congestion and skin dullness. Made up of key ingredients: Salicylic and Malic acids, this peel delivers immediate improvement to skin clarity and radiance. Referred to as the “lunchtime peel”, it requires no downtime and is safe for all skin types.
Take-Home Skincare
If you’re looking for an at-home skincare solution to kick acne to the curb, we recommend The Spa’s Triple Action Kojic Pads. Debuting at The Spa this summer, these powerful pads offer RX strength to effectively treat acne and hyperpigmentation. If you have previously used our at-home Glow Peel Pads, the Triple Action Kojic Pads will be a bit more aggressive when treating your skin, with noticeable results in as little as two weeks. We recommend using one pad per day at nighttime when you first start using this product. A moisturizer should not be used as a follow-up to pad applications – you should avoid covering any corrective product with moisturizers. $180
SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense is a great skincare product for those with aging, acne-prone skin. This oil-free serum is formulated with a potent acid-based complex. When used daily, this product helps to reduce excess sebum production, prevent acne formation, and exfoliate dead skin cells to minimize breakouts. It also refines skin texture, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. $96
A powerful vitamin C serum, SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF is an antioxidant for oily and blemish prone skin. Silymarin CF offers advanced environmental protection that helps prevent oil oxidation that leads to acne breakouts. Also oil-free, this serum helps to reduce oil production in as little as one week. $169 ** 12-week clinical study by SkinCeuticals
Target acne right on the spot with Epionce Purifying Spot Gel. This daily spot treatment is clinically proven to target stubborn acne than most leading prescriptions. It rapidly targets blemishes on the face and/or body without drying or irritating the skin. $40
