We’ll soon be putting away our turtlenecks and scarves as the weather warms. Unfortunately, those happen to be ideal garments for covering up a double chin. Now’s the time to schedule a consultation to learn more about KYBELLA® at our Maryville-area practice. KYBELLA is an injectable treatment approved by the FDA to reduce submental fullness–the localized fat just below the chin that causes the appearance of a double chin that no one likes.
We’ve tried to avoid–usually without success–that bad angle in a picture and thought where on earth did that chin come from?! Submental fullness is typically caused by a layer of fat below the chin and it can be a confidence killer. Before KYBELLA became available a few years ago, the only option for reducing the fat was liposuction surgery.
Patients from throughout Southern Illinois and St. Louis get KYBELLA injections at our medical spa. KYBELLA provides great results, but it does require a series of injections spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Patients typically need 2 or 3 appointments to achieve the desired effect. A topical anesthetic applied before the treatment minimizes the discomfort of the injections themselves, but the medication does cause mild to moderate discomfort once injected. That starts about 3 minutes after the injections but begins subsiding approximately 5 minutes after the injections.
What can someone receiving KYBELLA treatments expect?
We create a customized treatment plan for each patient, adjusting the number of injections based on the amount of submental fat present and the patient’s goals. Immediately before and after the injections, we apply ice to the area to minimize discomfort. The appointments usually take approximately 30 to 45 minutes and the actual injections take 2 to 3 minutes to administer. The injection area will be swollen for about 7 days, depending on the amount of KYBELLA used and the size of the treatment area.
In the case of KYBELLA, the swelling is a good and necessary part of the treatment because the inflammation helps the skin to recoil and tighten after the fat has been destroyed. Most patients describe the sensation after KYBELLA as odd, reporting that the treated area feels numb or jello-like as the fat cells are being destroyed by the medication. Patients can return to work (or any other normal activities) the next day if you don’t mind conducting those activities with swelling under the chin.
Since I joined The Spa at MidAmerica Plastic Surgery last fall, I LOVE doing KYBELLA treatments. Seeing the confidence restored to patients by their improved profiles and watching them rid themselves of an undesirable feature is so rewarding. I hope 2018 brings lots of beautifully improved jawlines!
KYBELLA is not for everyone. Women who are breastfeeding or pregnant may not be good candidates for the treatment. A complimentary consultation is required before receiving your KYBELLA treatment to ensure you are a candidate. For more information, contact us or call 618-307-6233.
