I find it remarkable how open patients are with their friends about the concerns they have, whether it be wrinkles they are unhappy with, how they would like to change breast size or appearance, the skin laxity from children, or localized adipose tissue (fat deposits). However, we see patients for labiaplasty and they frequently make the statement “I do not know anyone else that has ever had this concern.“
This seems to be the one topic that women do not wish to discuss with their friends, family, and often even their partner. Labia appearance or concerns are often a taboo topic. The official statistics state that there are more than 10,000 labiaplasty completed each year; however, I suspect the number is much higher based on the number we complete per year.
Enlargement of the labia minora can be bothersome. This is not just for the aesthetic appearance, but also can result in discomfort with activities such as walking, exercise, or sexual intercourse. The treatment is fairly easy with a relatively rapid recovery. Typically, this can be completely in the office with a local anesthetic. We also offer ProNox (nitrous oxide for comfort) if the patient chooses to use it. The procedure takes about an hour. The main restrictions during the recovery time include: no submerging in tubs or pools, no tampons, and no sexual intercourse. After 6 weeks, the patient is free to go back to life as normal with no restrictions.
Consultations are scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays. There is a $100 consultation fee due at the time of scheduling that is then applied to the cost of the procedure. Board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ryan Diederich treats patients for this regularly at MidAmerica Plastic Surgery in Glen Carbon, Illinois / St. Louis metro area.
