Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
Request Your ConsultationWhat is hyperhidrosis (excess sweating)?
Hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating, is a common condition that usually occurs in the palms of hands, soles of feet, and underarms. This extreme sweating can interfere with daily activities and cause social embarrassment.
BOTOX®
We offer botulinum toxin (BOTOX) injections to treat hyperhidrosis for many patients from Maryville, Edwardsville, and the St. Louis area. While we commonly use BOTOX to treat facial wrinkles at our Glen Carbon medspa, we also use it to block the chemical signals sent by nerves to stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive these signals, they do not produce moisture, and sweat is no longer produced. It doesn’t get backed up in your system, or go through different channels in the body: it simply is no longer produced in the treated area. You will still produce your normal amount of sweat elsewhere.

How is BOTOX treatment of excess sweating done?
If you are interested in BOTOX treatment for hyperhidrosis you will first receive an iodine test. An iodine starch test is administered to identify the area of the underarm that produces sweat. The underarms are painted with an iodine solution. Then, starch is powdered on the underarm. The patient will naturally start to sweat, turning the powder a dark color in the affected area. Once the problem area is identified, 50 units of BOTOX are administered per underarm. The procedure takes about 15 minutes, and you will receive approximately 15 injections per underarm.
Your excessive sweating should be dramatically reduced or completely gone within four weeks. The BOTOX treatment will last about 7 months, although some patients experience longer relief. BOTOX is not a cure. Your symptoms will gradually return, and when it becomes bothersome, we can repeat treatment. This can be completed at any of MidAmerica Plastic Surgery St. Louis Metro locations.
